Beautimport 1974 - 2024 Fifty years of beauty

That’s what Beautimport is celebrating: five decades of dedication, passion, professional commitment and investments making of Beautimport the Excellence it is today.

This is only the most recent chapter of a fascinating book telling, page after page, a one century long story. It dates back at the end of the 19th century.

From the end of the 19th century to the 1930s

During this time Arturo Giorgi, owner of DAGSON (Ditta Arturo Giorgi e Figli), was distributing beauty products, including Bourjois make-up, the prestigious brand imported from France.

1932 – Bourjois S.A.I. is founded. It is the third Bourjois manufaturing facility in Europe, after those in Paris and London

Time passed by while during the 1920s the business was growing steadly and successfully. Alessandro, son of Arturo, obtained from the French Company Bourjois cosmetics the licence for producing Bourjois in Italy, at Casalecchio di Reno, in the metropolitan city of Bologna.

A milestone, considering that at that time there were only two Bourjois production plants, one in Paris and the other one in London. The establishment of Bourjois S.A.I., the third production plant in Italy in1932 was an extraordinary event.

But it is more than that. To obtain the production license was not simply a privilege. It was in fact a clear confirmation of esteem and trust well deserved by Arturo first and by Alessandro then, for the work they carried out trough the years. It proved how much the French Company priced and appreciated the way the business was developed in Italy.

From distribution to production, from DAGSON to Bourjois S.A.I., the new Company founded 1932.

Pierre-François Lubin: the founder of Modern Perfumery

Modern Perfumery dates back 220 years ago in Paris, thanks to Pierre-François Lubin, considered its founder.

After an apprenticeship with the famous Perfumer Jean-Louis Fargeon, official supplier of Queen Marie Antoinette and at the Tombarelli atelier in Grasse, Pierre-François Lubin opened “Au Bouquet de Roses”, his first own boutique next to Palais Royal.

Lubin - Fragrances of the imperial courts of Europe

Pierre-François Lubin's fragrances immediately conquered dandies of the time. Moreover, they allowed him to be appointed as Imperial Court Perfumer. He used to supply fragrances and cosmetic products to Empress Josephine and Princess Borghese, respectively Napoleon’s wife and sister. Later on, he was at service of Duchess of Angoulême (Marie Antoniette’s daughter). He served also the last Queen of France, Maria Amlia,

Pierre-François Lubin's fame soon crossed French borders, allowing him to become the official supplier of King George IV of England in 1821 and Tsar Alexander I of Russia in 1823.

Pierre François Lubin passes the baton to Felix Prot

Years passed and, in 1844, Felix Prot, Pierre François Lubin's favourite apprentice and spiritual heir, took over the Maison. From that moment on, Maison Lubin remained in the Prot family for more than one century. After Felix Prot, his son Paul, his grandchildren Marcel and Pierre, and his great-grandchildren Paul and André, held the of the Maison  until the end of the 1960s. Four generations that allowed Lubin grow, making its fame worldwide.

After WW2 to the 60es. The new generation.

The quarter-century since WW2 to the 60es was a time of favourable outcomes.

André and Paul Prot, taking over Lubin in 1945, worked on major projects, creating also Gin Fizz. The iconic fragrance launched 1955 as a tribute to Grace Kelly, the most beautiful and elegant woman in the 20th century, proved to be an immense and timeless success. Once again, Lubin set its stamp in the world of Perfumery. About ten years later, 1968, it was the turn of L'Eau Neuve: another memorable creation by Maison Lubin.

The echo of these successes, supported by the history of the oldest perfume house in France, never faded.

A few decades later Maison Lubin was taken up and reinterpreted in a contemporary way by a passionate and visionary entrepreneur, Gilles Thevenin… but we will talk about this in the next issue of the Daily Luxury newsletter.
